Gout was once the disease once associated with gluttonous indulgence and King Henry VIII. Diet clearly plays a role, but genetics has a big influence on whether a person will develop this painful form of arthritis, which is caused by high uric acid levels.

Estimates are that about four percent of people in the U.S. have gout at any given time, and 10-20 percent of people may suffer a gout attack at some point in their lives.

Gout has become increasingly prevalent in recent decades as rich diets have become more commonplace. But genetics also plays an important role in the condition, specifically variants in genes involved in the excretion of uric acid from the kidneys.

Variants in the genes ABCG2 and SLC2A9 are associated with increased risk for gout. The gene ABCG2 encodes a protein that transports uric acid out of cells, while SLC2A9 encodes a protein that helps regulate the amount of uric acid removed from the blood by the kidneys.

Gout can be quite painful. When the body produces too much uric acid, the uric acid can form crystals in the joints that trigger attacks from the immune system. Consuming rich foods, sugary drinks, red meats and beer can increase the risk for developing the condition. For those at risk or who already have the condition, there are treatments and recommendations for keeping attacks at bay. Among the recommendations are staying well-hydrated, limiting the intake of red meat, beer and sugary drinks and regular monitoring of the uric acid level in your blood. There are also some medications used to help control the condition. Gout is also associated with other conditions including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, kidney disease and obesity.

Everywhere there is DNA being made or broken down, there is uric acid. The build up of uric acid causes gout, but uric acid is also a molecule that is one of the building blocks of genes.

So why is it that gout is an extremely rare disease in the animal kingdom? The answer goes by the name “uricase.” This gene produces a protein that breaks down uric acid.

Uricase evolved a very long time ago and exists in organisms ranging from single-celled bacteria to almost all vertebrates. Its existence protects against uric acid build-up and, therefore, against gout. Unfortunately, for us humans, the uricase gene in our DNA is so mutated it no longer works. But we are not the only species to suffer from the so-called “King of Disease.”
Dalmations also famously get gout. In their case the mutations occur in a gene called SLC2A9 that helps excrete uric acid from the body. Interestingly, variations in this same gene are also associated with gout in humans. Most birds and some reptiles also develop gout, especially when kept as pets. This seems to be the result of extremely high protein diets and kidney failure.

Perhaps the most surprising species afflicted with this disease is the T-rex. Fossil evidence of damaged joints have provided a convincing argument that the King of Dinosaurs, perhaps appropriately, harbored the King of Diseases. However, in this case, we may never be sure whether it was caused by a genetic mutation or a diet rich in red meats.

More than 50 million Americans live with the pain and discomfort of Arthritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CureTogether, a free resource owned by 23andMe, asked 1,292 people who have Arthritis to share what treatments work best for them, and the results are fairly evenly split between medical and lifestyle-driven interventions.

People who participated in the survey reported that corticosteroids, heat, rest, and massage helped them feel better. They also said that the drug Low-Dose Naltrexone and having joint replacement surgery eased their discomfort. Treatment ideas that didn’t seem to help as much included glucosamine and aspirin.

Most Effective Rated Treatments for Patients with Arthritis

  • Joint replacement
  • Enbrel
  • Heat
  • Massage
  • Braces/splints
  • Rest

These are all treatments suggested and reported by patients, so some redundancy in the terms used is to be expected. In addition, the term “treatment” in this study refers to anything patients describe using to help them feel better, whether it is an officially prescribed medical treatment or not. Where did this data come from? This is the result of a four-year CureTogether study on Arthritis, in which 1,292 people shared information about their symptoms and what treatments worked best for them.

CureTogether’s research findings are different than those made by 23andMe, which look at genetic associations with illness, traits and drug response. CureTogether present its findings just as they are – patient-reported data – to stimulate discussion and generate new insights for further research.

East Lyme, CT — A one-week camp is helping children with special needs learn how to ride a bicycle.

The Miracle League of Connecticut has partnered with East Lyme’s Parks and Recreation Department to offer the I Can Bike Camp, which uses adapted training bicycles.

Riders must be at least 8 years old and have a disability. They attend five, 75-minute session, transitioning from riding indoors to going outside.

“It’s a population that we want to serve, these kids with special needs, and it has been more than we could have expected from day one,” East Lyme Parks and Recreation Director David Putnam said.

“This program gives them the confidence to be able to do things with their families that they might not otherwise do, so we’re very happy to give that opportunity to East Lyme,” Jim Capodiece, who is a volunteer at the I Can Bike Camp, said.

I Can Bike Camp, which is based out of Illinois, organized 96 camps this summer.

You Really Need a Pair of Bike Shorts

The padding in a pair of bike shorts will range from thick to thin. The thickest pads act as shock a absorbent with layers of thick foams or gel inserts. The chamois padding that is inside a pair of bicycle shorts also will reduce abrasion and cushions the butt. If you are just starting to ride, or the longer your ride, the more density you need in a chamois pad. The elite pads are dense and designed for long distance riders. The pads are also distinguishing between gender in the higher end cycle shorts. The pads that have a line or compression through the center of the chamois are engineered for the male anatomy. The women’s chamois have more of a pillow. There are also unisex pads that both men and women enjoy. A more seasoned bicycle rider may want a thin pad in their bike shorts so that it prevents abrasion and yet feels invisible. Using a thin chamois pad is also popular in triathlon shorts where the short is worn for swim, bike, run.

Apparently, there is quite a bit to be said about the pad that goes between your buns and the “saddle”. Not only is this a shock absorbency issue but also a moisture barrier. The chamois must be worn without underwear in order to be worn properly.

Extra padding is not extra comfortable.  As you pedal, your sitbones sink into your saddle, settling on the sturdiest surface available so as to provide the most power to your pedal stroke. The more foam you add, the harder they’re going to press to find that power—ultimately leading to soreness.

The Seat

There are so many different shapes, sizes, styles, materials……what is the best bet for my booty?

Endurance racers should look more to the comfort end of the spectrum. If you’re strictly a recreational racer, then you want to look for the most comfortable saddle your budget will allow. Most saddles lie somewhere in between, providing a good level of comfort at a reasonable weight.

Speaking plainly; the seat is going to be a trial and error test for the most part. Yes, bikers before you have some good ideas about distance versus mountain versus men’s seats versus women’s seats, etc. There are several varieties of seats that are designed to release tension from certain pressure points that become exceedingly painful on a long bumpy ride.

Know what your tender areas are, keep in mind what kind of cycling you are into and find your fit. The seat matters.

Candida is a type of yeast that naturally exists in the body. It’s a normal part of your gut bacteria, and is present in mucous membranes, on the skin, and in the birth canal (1).

Under normal circumstances, candida isn’t a problem and it coexists with the other bacteria in your intestinal tract. It’s only when candida grows and overpopulates your digestive system, that it can spread throughout the rest of your body and cause an infection known as candida overgrowth (2).

There are more than 20 different types of candida that can cause a fungal infection, but the most common is candida albicans, or C. albicans (2).

Candida is known as an ‘opportunistic’ fungus because given the right conditions, there’s no limit to where it will spread. This can cause serious damage to your organs and tissues, including the brain and kidneys (2). Once candida overgrowth gets to this point, it becomes a chronic health condition called systemic candida (3).

Candida is also the fungus responsible for causing thrush (oral candidiasis), which is common in babies, and vaginal yeast infections (4).

Symptoms of an overgrowth of Candida include;

  • Bad breath
  • Bloating, belching, intestinal gas, and/or abdominal pain
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Endometriosis or infertility
  • Fatigue and chronic fatigue
  • Frequent mood swings
  • Impotence
  • Insomnia

I am not sure of exactly when it happened; but at some point in the last ten years, the term “Leaky Gut Syndrome” became a regular fixture all over the internet. This rather disturbing and strange term is self-explanatory.

Leaky gut syndrome is when the lining of the intestines is worn down and thin enough for undigested material to absorb into the blood stream and cause a large host of medical issues. Rashes, migraines, back pain, urinary tract infections, gas, cramps and joint pain are some of the effects of leaky gut syndrome.

This all makes sense, except for one thing; leaky gut syndrome is not actually a recognized medical condition.

There is a great debate about which came first, the chicken or the egg? Proponents of leaky gut syndrome contend that eating large amounts of breads, sugars and processed foods irritate and wear down the lining of the intestines and cause a whole host of medical issues.

Critics of leaky gut syndrome claim that the other medical issues are what causes the wear down of the lining of the intestines. These claims come from groups of scholars who see a correlation between the thinning of intestinal lining and instances of multiple sclerosis, diabetes and lupus.

People with serious intestinal disorders such as crohns disease, celiacs or irritable bowel will also be at a greater risk for thinning of the intestinal wall and hence “leakage” of it’s contents into the blood stream.

This is even more of a dilemma when one recognizes how much the stomach affects the rest of the body. It is widely agreed upon that a very large percentage of the body’s immune system is initiated in the stomach. There are also several studies indicating that most of a person’s serotonin, one of the “feel good” chemicals in the brain, is created in the stomach.

Your feet have more sweat glands per inch than any other part of the body—an average of 250,000 of them. They secrete sweat all the time, keeping your skin moist and supple. When you put your feet in a pair of shoes, the confinement allows fungi and bacteria to thrive. The teaming bacteria produce a substance called isovaleric acid, which emits the characteristic locker room stench associated with foot odor. “The fungi and bacteria, which are a normal part of our skin’s flora, proliferate in the dark, moist, warm environment of the shoes,” says Paul Langer, DPM. “Foot odor tends to be worse in warm weather and in active people.”

Do Your Feet Work Harder Than You Do?

Sometimes feet perspire a lot because they simply work harder than they should, says Neal Kramer, DPM. A structural defect (such as flat feet) or a job that keeps you hopping all day could be the underlying culprit. Either would increase the activity of your foot muscles. And the harder your feet work, the more they perspire in an attempt to cool themselves. “If you correct the underlying problem with an arch support or some other orthotic shoe insert,” says Kramer, “you can actually cut down on the amount of sweat produced. If the muscles don’t have to work as hard, they just don’t give off as much heat.”

So, if you keep your feet dry and as clean as possible; you may stand a chance to have some healthier feet.

“Excess dietary carbohydrates and protein are converted to a type of fat called triglyceride. When people attempt to lose weight, they are attempting to metabolize these triglycerides while keeping their fat-free mass intact…

Triglycerides are comprised of three types of atoms: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Triglyceride molecules can be broken down only by unlocking these atoms, through a process known as oxidation.

The researchers chose to follow the path of these atoms when leaving the body. They found that when 10 kg of fat were oxidized, 8.4 kg were converted and excreted as carbon dioxide (CO2) via the lungs, and 1.6 kg became water (H20).

In order for 10 kg of human fat to be oxidized, the researchers calculated that 29 kg of oxygen must be inhaled. Oxidation then produces a total of 28 kg of CO2 and 11 kg of H20.”

Breathe More

The authors of the study estimate that by swapping 1 hour of sitting with 1 hour of moderate exercise you could raise your metabolic rate by sevenfold.

In other words, the lungs are the primary excretory organ in weight loss, according to the researchers.

Simply increasing your respiratory rate or how much oxygen you breathe in can significantly boost your metabolism. And the best way to do this is by exercising.

Build a new social edifice — a circle of people who have a positive influence in your life. Surround yourself with energy that is constructive and will allow you to be the best person you can be.
